As part of our JLGB Virtual Summer Extravaganza, Craig David joined us tonight for a youth-led Q&A, to talk about lockdown, his memories of our celebration last September and more!
Craig David is a British singer, songwriter, rapper, DJ and record producer best known for his singles “Re-Rewind”, “Fill Me In”, “When the Bassline Drops”, and “Nothing Like This”.
Raised in Southampton, Craig Ashley David was born to an Anglo-Jewish mother and a Afro-Grenadian father. He was raised by his mother after his parents separated when he was eight, but his father, a former reggae musician, encouraged him to play classical guitar, though it was clear from an early age that young Craig was more interested in singing. Craig used to sing regularly at the age of 14 at the West Indian social club that his father took him to.
While studying for an engineering degree at the Southampton City College, his music career would be kickstarted by working with artists such as Damage and the Garage duo Artful Dodger, before meeting, and then signing with, Colin Lester’s Wildstar Records – as Colin himself told us, as our JLGB Virtual guest just a few weeks ago.
From the beginning of his career, Craig was achieving top 10 in the charts, with songs such as “Fill Me In” hitting number one, alongside four more singles in 2000. His debut album, Born to Do It has sold more than 8 million copies and has earned multi-platinum status in more than 20 countries, and was voted in 2009 as Number 2 on MTV’s “Greatest Album of All-Time” behind Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
His continued success brought in nine consecutive top 10 hits – and included albums such as Slicker Than Your Average, The Story Goes… and Trust Me.
Craig’s contribution to the music industry was rightly honoured by receiving an honorary degree as a Doctor of Music from Southampton Solent University.
Moving to Miami, Craig launched his TS5 DJ brand and joined Colin’s new JEM Entertainment Group before releasing Following My Intuition in 2016 to return to the number-one album spot!
Nominated for fourteen Brit Awards, receiving 2 Grammy Award Nominations, selling over 15 million records worldwide and making former JLGB Virtual guest Anton Danyluk cry on Love Island, Craig has also regularly used his platform to raise awareness and much needed fundraising for a range of causes including Sports Aid, and was appointed the World Health Organisation’s Goodwill ambassador for tuberculosis.
Of course, how could we mention Craig and not talk about the phenomenal JLGB Celebration event for young Jewish Volunteers where he raised the roof with over 1,200 people at the Roundhouse last September. He is such an amazing friend to JLGB, and we are so incredibly grateful that he has been able to join us this evening.
So Ladies and Gentlemen, the moment you’ve all be waiting for, please join me in welcoming, the amazing......Craig David!!!!
