Born to a working-class family, Wesley Paul William Streeting grew up in Stepney, London in 1983, and lived in a council flat. He attended St Peter’s Primary School in Wapping before attending Westminster City School, a comprehensive state school in Victoria, London.

He went on to study history at Selwyn College, University of Cambridge, where he got to serve as Junior Common Room President; in which capacity he was a member of Cambridge University Students' Union Council. This led to Wes being elected as the President of the National Union of Students in 2009

After completing his term as President of the NUS, Wes served as Chief Executive of the Helena Kennedy Foundation, an educational charity that promotes access to higher education to students from further education colleges. Then he went on to serve as Head of Education at Stonewall, aLGBT+ rights charity, where he led their Education for All campaign to tackle homophobia in schools.

Progressing to local politics in a July 2010 by-election, he was elected as a Labour councillor for the Chadwell ward on London Borough of Redbridge Council Then in the 2015 general electionWes was elected as the Labour Member of Parliament for Ilford Norththe constituency where JLGB HQ is located, and then he was re-elected in the 2019 election.

Since becoming an MP, Wes became the vice-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Antisemitism, a co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on British Jews. He is also a co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims and held a series of London-wide consultations to create the Working Definition of Islamophobia.

After an impressive political career, iOctober 16th 2020Sir Keir Starmer as Leader of the Labour Party, appointed Wes as the Shadow Minister for Schools, which I am sure has been keeping him busy during lockdown, especially with schools closed since January.
